How to Choose a Shaded Pole Motor for Your Small Appliance

Publish Time: 2026-09-17     Origin: Site

Introduction

Shaded pole motors are the workhorses of small appliance applications. Their simple construction, low cost, and reliable operation make them ideal for low-power kitchen devices like range hoods, microwave cooling systems, oven convection fans, and refrigerator air circulation. But selecting the right one requires attention to several key parameters.

1. Power Requirements

Shaded pole motors are typically limited to below 50W. For applications requiring more power, consider CBB61 capacitor motors.

Appliance

Typical Power

Oven fan

10–30W

Microwave cooling fan

5–15W

Air fryer fan

15–40W

Refrigerator evaporator fan

5–20W

Range hood fan

10–40W

2. Size and Mounting

Shaded pole motors come in a range of frame sizes with output power from 5W to 40W, where the stator stack thickness (e.g., 12mm, 16mm, 20mm, 25mm) directly determines torque output. When selecting a motor, key size and mounting factors include mounting hole spacing, shaft diameter (commonly 4mm, 5mm, or 6mm), shaft extension length, and shaft end type — either a flat cut (D-shaft) or knurling for hub attachment. Custom shafts and brackets are also available for OEM orders.

3. Noise Control

Shaded pole motors typically operate at 42–48 dB(A). For noise-sensitive applications, choose motors with precision-balanced rotors and quality bearings.

  • Sleeve bearings (porous bronze) suit horizontal, low-temperature, intermittent use but dry out near hot ovens, causing noise and seizure

  • Dual ball bearings handle high temperatures, continuous duty (24/7), and vertical mounting — resisting heat degradation and delivering longer, quieter operation.

4. Temperature Rating

Choose the insulation class based on the operating environment: Class B (130°C) for refrigerators and light ventilation; Class F (155°C) for ovens and air fryers; and Class H (180°C) for range hoods, oven convection fans, and food dehydrators operating near heat sources.

5. Lifespan

Shaded pole motors have no brushes or switches to wear out, making them highly reliable and virtually maintenance-free. Look for bearings rated for 20,000+ hours of continuous operation, as bearing life is typically the main factor limiting motor lifespan. Dual ball bearings offer the longest service life, especially in high-temperature or continuous-duty applications.

6. Certification

Ensure motors meet the certification requirements for your target market: UL for North America, CE for Europe, and RoHS for global environmental compliance. Choosing a motor with these certifications already in place simplifies your product approval process and helps ensure your finished appliance can be legally sold in your target regions.

Conclusion

Selecting the right shaded pole motor involves balancing power, size, noise, temperature rating, and cost. For small appliance manufacturers, partnering with a motor supplier that offers both standard and custom solutions ensures you get the right component for your product.
