Universal Motor Explained: Working Principle and Applications

Publish Time: 2026-09-07     Origin: Site

Introduction

Among the various types of electric motors, the universal motor stands out for one remarkable feature: it can operate on both AC and DC power. Unlike CBB61 capacitor motors (which use a capacitor for phase shifting) or shaded pole motors (which use a shading coil), universal motors use a series-wound design with brushes and a commutator.

What Is a Universal Motor?

A universal motor is a commutated series-wound motor where the stator field coils are connected in series with the rotor windings through a commutator and brushes. It is essentially a DC series motor specially designed for AC operation.

Working Principle

  1. On DC supply – Current flows through field coils and armature in series, creating magnetic field that produces torque

  2. On AC supply – Current in both field and armature alternates synchronously. Because both reverse at the same time, the mechanical force always occurs in the same direction

  3. Series connection – Field windings connected in series with armature via brushes

Conclusion

The universal motor's high speed and high starting torque make it ideal for kitchen appliances that require rapid, powerful operation. For fan and ventilation applications where quiet, continuous operation is needed, the CBB61 capacitor motor remains the better choice.
