What Is a Shaded Pole Motor? Applications and Working Principle

Publish Time: 2026-09-04     Origin: Site

Introduction

The shaded pole motor is one of the simplest and most cost-effective electric motor designs available today. Unlike CBB61 capacitor motors, shaded pole motors do not use a capacitor—they rely on a short-circuited copper ring (called a shading coil) to create a rotating magnetic field.

A shaded pole motor is a single-phase asynchronous motor that uses a short-circuited winding on a portion of each stator pole to create a rotating magnetic field and produce starting torque. It is widely used in low-power applications because of its reliable and inexpensive design.

Working Principle of a Shaded Pole Motor

  1. Main winding energized – AC power applied to the main winding generates magnetic flux in the stator pole

  2. Shading coil effect – A portion of each stator pole (about one-third) is wrapped with a short-circuited copper ring called a shading coil

  3. Phase displacement – The shading coil induces a current that causes magnetic flux in the shaded portion to lag behind the flux in the unshaded portion

  4. Rotating magnetic field – This phase difference creates a rotating field that moves from the unshaded portion toward the shaded portion

  5. Rotor starts turning – The rotating field induces current in the squirrel-cage rotor, generating torque

Construction of a Shaded Pole Motor

  • Stator – Salient-pole construction with laminated poles

  • Main winding – Concentrated winding around each stator pole

  • Shading coil – A single short-circuited turn of copper or aluminum

  • Rotor – Squirrel-cage type with skewed rotor bars

  • No capacitor, commutator, brushes, slip rings, or centrifugal switch

Applications of Shaded Pole Motors

Due to their low cost and simplicity, shaded pole motors are used in applications that do not require high starting torque:

  • Small cooling fans and exhaust fans

  • Oven fans and convection fans

  • Microwave oven fans

  • Refrigerator cooling fans

  • Range hoods

  • Food dehydrators

Conclusion

The shaded pole motor may be less efficient than a CBB61 capacitor motor, but its simplicity and extremely low cost make it ideal for very small, low-power applications. For B2B buyers, understanding the difference between shaded pole and CBB61 capacitor motors is essential for selecting the right motor for each application.
